With ” The Name of the Rose » by Umberto Eco, Milo Manara takes on one of the masterpieces of Italian literature in a comic strip. A medieval thriller that is both a learning story, theological and philosophical, which will have marked its time and that of today with its erudition and its reflection on the power of books.

It is one of the most famous medieval thrillers in the world. A detective story in a Benedictine abbey in the 14th century, born in the 1980s from the pen of the great Italian writer Umberto Eco, who explained upon its release that he had simply “wanted to poison a monk”. He nevertheless added a few other elements: theological reflections, an erudite homage to the powers of language and the book, a praise of transgressive and liberating laughter, references to the painting of the Middle Ages between light and darkness.

Immediate success as that of “ Name of the Rose », brought to the screen a few years later by French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud, with a cast as international as it is impressive. Today, after the 7th art, it is the 9th art which is taking over, thanks to a master of comics, friend of Hugo Pratt and Federico Fellini, maestro of erotic comics, but also passionate about of medieval iconography.

The 1st of the two volumes of the “ Name of the Rose » adapted by Milo Manara has just been released by Glénat.

Reportage : Solène Gardré assisted in the creation Everybody is here » by Frenchman Simon Delattre who directs the Rodéo Théâtre, a large family fresco, which asks questions about paternity.
