The National Olympic Committee of Armenia should have been one of the first to stand by Mihran Harutyunyan, a 66 kg Greco-Roman wrestler, who was unfairly robbed of the Olympic gold medal in Rio. However, the NAOC believes that the Armenian wrestler lost a “beautiful and stubborn” fight.
“…Mihran Harutyunyan’s opponent in the final was Serbian, former world champion Davor Stefanenko. A beautiful and persistent fight ended 1-1, and since the Serb was the last to score a point, the referees gave the victory to Stefanek,” it is written on the official website of the NAOC.
“Armenian Times” commented:
“It turns out that the National Olympic Committee of Armenia did not notice that in fact Mihran Harutyunyan lost in wrestling due to an unknown bias of refereeing. To remind, this is not the first time that Mihran Harutyunyan is a victim of such injustice, and all of this is the personal revenge of the president of the Russian Wrestling Union, the chairman of the refereeing committee of the International Wrestling Federation, Mikhail Mamiashvliu with Mihran. A petition for the return of Mihran’s Olympic gold has been launched on the website change.org. In reality, however, there has not been a case in the history of sports when the result of the match was changed or an athlete was disqualified as a result of thousands of signatures,” the newspaper wrote.
