Scientists from New York University have created a neural network that can accurately reconstruct human speech by analyzing the neural activity of the cerebral cortex.

Decoding speech through “mind reading,” scientists report, is complicated by the fact that the systems responsible for speech production and processing interact with each other in a complex and not fully understood manner.

The new neural network made it possible not only to recreate speech, but also to reproduce it in a person’s voice, if audio recordings of him speaking were preserved.

The authors of the development expect that it will make it possible to create a new generation of speech prostheses.
