Berlin It was kind of a late Christmas present for Kiev. At the end of January, after a long dispute, Germany announced the delivery of Leopard main battle tanks. Ukraine had been demanding the vehicles for months.
The tank dispute had not only caused domestic tensions in the run-up, but also considerable diplomatic upheavals between Washington and Berlin. In the end, the deal only went through because the USA was also willing to supply its own Abrams main battle tanks.
Given the intensity of the debate that accompanied the Leo deliveries, the impact of tanks in the current Ukrainian offensive has been minimal so far. And hopes aimed at training Ukrainian troops in NATO countries have not been fulfilled either.
