The Nupes put to the test of its differences

by time news

While all the forces of the left have not ceased to rail against each other throughout the presidential campaign, the agreement concluded between them at the beginning of May, defining the contours of the New People’s Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), their made it possible to form a bloc in the June legislative elections and to occupy 151 seats in the National Assembly. At the time of drawing up the first assessment, satisfaction is displayed in the ranks of the coalition. “The agreement that we concluded in ten days at the national level could seem precarious. But the common program allowed us to form a real coalition”welcomes the co-president of the environmental group in the Assembly, Julien Bayou.

“Within the intergroup extremely different political cultures coexist”, notes the president of the Democratic and Republican Left group, the communist André Chassaigne. These approaches were expressed in three nuances, during the positioning of the groups on the texts. The socialists, for example, mostly supported the adoption of the health bill, while “rebellious” and communists voted largely against and environmentalists abstained. On the bill concerning purchasing power, the socialist group abstained, when La France insoumise (LFI), the communists and the ecologists voted against.

Regret of the left

With nearly sixty additional deputies since the previous mandate, the LFI group has gained space on the benches of the Assembly and has taken the opportunity to amplify its strategy of conflictuality. It is reflected in numerous scandals against the presidential camp or the National Rally, numerous impromptu interventions, regular points of order, or even the tabling of hundreds of amendments, sometimes only to rename the government’s proposals, to the image of the one worn by the deputy Hadrien Clouet to rename the “Prime Macron” in “smoke bonus”.

This strategy of permanent brilliance does not convince some of the elected Socialists and Communists, who remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the method. From the start of the legislature, the filing of a motion of censure against the Borne government by LFI tensed in the socialist ranks. Six of the thirty-one deputies of the group, including Valérie Rabault, abstained during the vote, judging that there was no sense in censoring a government not yet put to the test.

For Philippe Brun, his bench colleagues had above all, that day, “refused LFI’s method of filing this motion without consulting its partners”. A reproach in the face of taking initiatives that are too solitary, which could pass for a desire for hegemony, particularly formulated at the start of the term of office to the “rebellious”. “There were moments of hesitation and things that we forgot to communicate to each other through lack of habit. As they say, you learn by walking”argues Ugo Bernalicis, who admits having himself made a mistake by filing a motion of censure against the health bill without warning the other groups.
