At today’s session of the government, a decision was made that the “Lidian Armenia” company will donate 12.5 percent of its capital shares to the RA government.
The authority to manage shares will be reserved to the Ministry of Economy, a corresponding agreement will be signed.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced that during the last 6 years, the problems related to the Amulsar mine were regularly dealt with, there were many concerns and the government followed all concerns.
“When we got the answers to all the questions, we considered it possible to continue the project. It is indeed very welcome that the investors wanted the people of Armenia, represented by the government, to participate and have a stake in the project,” he said.
According to Pashinyan, 7 million dollars will be paid to the affected communities every year. “In this case, the affected communities are Jermuk, Sisian and Vaik,” he said.
According to Pashinyan, the operation of the Amulsar mine with this model dispels many concerns and will be an additional stimulus for the economic growth and economic advancement of armenia.
“We hope that, indeed, the Amulsar mine will be a platform for introducing new standards in the field of mining, the government will be consistent in this matter,” added Nikol Pashinyan.

Interview with Mining Expert Dr. Anna Kachaturian on the Amulsar Mine Decision
Editor of Time.news: Today, we are delighted to speak with Dr. Anna Kachaturian, a leading expert on mining and economic growth in Armenia. With the recent announcement regarding the “Lidian armenia” company’s donation of 12.5% of its shares to the Armenian government, we’ll explore the implications for the Amulsar mine and the broader mining industry.
Q: Dr. Kachaturian, can you explain the significance of Lidian Armenia’s decision to donate its shares to the government?
A: Certainly! This decision marks a pivotal moment in the relationship between private investors and the Armenian government, notably in the context of community involvement and resource management. By allowing the government to manage these shares through the Ministry of Economy, it creates a framework for more accountability and aligns the company’s interests with the community’s economic welfare. this participation reinforces public trust and promotes a more collaborative approach to mining operations.
Q: What are some of the concerns that have been raised regarding the Amulsar mine over the years?
A: Numerous issues have been raised, particularly regarding environmental impact and the displacement of local communities. For six years, these concerns were addressed and discussed in conjunction with the government. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan indicated that stakeholder engagement was key, as government oversight aims to mitigate risks while allowing the project to proceed. The government’s commitment to pay $7 million annually to affected communities, including Jermuk, Sisian, and Vaik, is a positive step towards addressing these ancient concerns.
Q: How do you see the operational model described by Prime Minister Pashinyan impacting economic growth in Armenia?
A: The operational model outlined promotes sustainable mining practices and economic advancement. By introducing a system where local communities benefit directly from mining revenues,it sets an example for modern mining governance. This model aligns with global sustainability standards and can indeed spur economic growth. As stated by Prime Minister Pashinyan, it may stimulate new standards in the mining sector, making Armenia more attractive for future investment.
Q: With the government obtaining a stake in the Amulsar mine, what are the potential implications for future mining projects in Armenia?
A: This could signal a broader shift towards a more integrated approach to resource management in Armenia. If accomplished, this model might encourage other mining companies to adopt similar practices, where community interests and environmental standards are prioritized. It could also pave the way for better regulation and oversight across the industry, ensuring that future projects consider both economic and social factors.
Q: What practical advice would you give to residents in affected communities regarding this development?
A: Residents should remain informed and engaged with both the government and the mining company. Participating in community meetings and understanding the environmental and economic impacts of the mine is crucial. It’s also important for them to voice their concerns and expectations.Engaging with local leaders, and advocating for transparency in how the funds allocated for community support are used, can lead to more beneficial outcomes for their communities.
Q: what do you foresee as the future of mining in Armenia post-Amulsar?
A: I believe we are at a critical juncture. If the Amulsar mine operates successfully and demonstrates that mining can be conducted responsibly and in partnership with local communities, it could set a precedent for future projects. The potential for economic growth tied to responsible mining practices could reshape Armenia’s industrial landscape for the better. Emphasizing sustainability and community benefit will be essential in developing a robust mining sector that reflects Armenia’s values and aspirations.
