When we think of scams or scams, we almost always tend to believe that in our case we would not fall into certain traps, or we see it as something distant that is unlikely to happen to us. But the truth is that, especially through the Internet, we are more exposed than we think to being deceived somehow and we end up with some bad consequence.

One of the most common forms of action that cybercriminals have is through emails. In this modality, known as ‘phishing’, they usually send messages posing as companies or organizations known to the majority of consumers, in order for them to trust them and end up providing compromised information such as bank, residence or personal details.

But although today the most sophisticated cybercrimes can occur, the truth is that many people continue to be fraudulent off the Internet. Today we are talking about what is done through a phone call and what is called ‘vishing’, a term that comes from combining ‘voice’ y ‘phishing’that is to say, it is a scam similar to ‘phishing’ but using the voice instead of a written message.

What is vishing?

As we explained about cybercrime that is in writing, in the case of ‘vishing’, which occurs through a phone callthe person who calls you is someone who is speaking, supposedly, on behalf of a well-known company or organization, sometimes they can even try to impersonate someone you know.

In this scam, an attempt is made to make the potential victim provide sensitive information, such as their ID or even their bank account number, with which they could end up stealing money or impersonating your identity, and also make a second call depending on the context. For example, it is usual for a first call in which we are informed of an increase in the telephone rate and then, posing as another company, offer an offer for which data such as those indicated above are requested. This has been reported by the Police through their social networks.

That is why, if we receive any suspicious commercial calls that do not make much sense for us to receive, we must go with caution and try to make sure that it is a real company, organization or person and that they are not impersonating one of them, since we could be saving ourselves a lot of trouble for a simple phone call.

These scams have been going on for years but today they are still more active than we think, so some tips not to fall are to be wary of offers or promotions that are too good, especially if they are offered after a call that indicates damage, and never give personal or bank information until we are sure that it is an official call, contacting that company, organization or person in another way.
