When President Yoon Seok-yeol visited the Yangjae branch of Nonghyup Hanaro Mart in Seocho-gu, Seoul on the 18th to check prices, the store was selling green onions for 875 won per bundle (1 kg). Regarding this, Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized President Yoon to the effect that he does not know prices.
In relation to this, the President’s Office said, “The reason Hanaro Mart (Yangjae Branch) was able to sell green onions for 875 won is because the government’s price stabilization policy was sequentially reflected on the site and Hanaro Mart’s own discounts were included.”
According to the President’s Office, the price of a bunch of green onions on the 18th was 4,250 won (Hanaro Mart Yangjae Branch). It is explained that the final selling price was 875 won through the delivery unit price support of 2,000 won, the company’s own discount of 1,000 won, and the Nonghyup discount support of 375 won.
The President’s Office said that Hanaro Mart has a higher discount rate than other distributors. According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corporation’s Agricultural Products Distribution Information Service (KAMIS), the price of green onions at major Hanaro Mart branches was 875 won per 1kg of product as of March 22. It was added that it is distributed in the range of ~966 won.
The President’s Office said, “Vegetables are grown in the open field and are very sensitive to weather conditions such as drought, rainy season, and heavy snow,” and added, “Green onions, an essential food ingredient, are mainly grown in winter (Jeonnam), spring (Gyeonggi? Jeonbuk), and summer (Gangwon? Gyeonggi). He said, “As mountainous areas are circulated, the impact of damage in some areas is high.”
He continued, “In particular, the price of vegetables showed the highest trend during the last government period from 2020 to 2022,” and “The average consumer price of green onions rose to 6,981 won/kg in March 2021, leading to ‘patech’ and ‘companion green onions.’ He pointed out, “New words such as were also popular.”
The President’s Office said, “The previous government recorded the highest prices for green onions and eggs,” and the Yoon Seok-yeol government maintained producer prices without any intervention in wholesale prices, and implemented special measures to ease the burden on consumers through support for unit price of delivery, support for discounts, and direct supply of imported fruits. He emphasized that countermeasures are in progress.
