About 42% of the energy produced in Spain comes from renewable sources, but while in regions like Castilla y León 89% of megawatts come from clean sources, in communities like the Balearic Islands they barely reach 7%. In Asturias the share is 18%, but it has hardly advanced in the last decade.

According to the data provided by Red Eléctrica de España and which take into account the megawatt production from January to October 2022, Castilla y León is followed in the rate of renewables by Aragon (75.3%), Castilla-La Mancha (62% ), Galicia (61.9%) and La Rioja (49.6%). At the bottom are the Balearic Islands (7.3%), the Basque Country (10.8%), Catalonia (14.4%), the Valencian Community (15.1%), Asturias (18.5%) and the Canary Islands ( 21.5%).

Why is the production of renewable energy so disparate? As explained by the director of the Engineering Department of the European University of Madrid, Antonio Latorre, the most important factor when it comes to producing clean energy is the availability of resources, but there are other determining factors. “If there is a lot of wind, a lot of wind energy can be generated, but it also depends on the availability and price of the land, because highly industrialized autonomies have expensive land prices, and that means that, even if there are resources, they cannot be exploited for the high costs involved in building these facilities”, details Latorre.

Regarding the disparity that exists between the communities, the engineer clarifies that it does not depend so much on regional policies, since the framework of the measures applied by the regions is dictated by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge which, in turn , follow the European guidelines.

In Spain, more non-renewable electricity (57.8%) than green (42.1%) is generated, although if compared to what was produced in 2012, clean energies have increased by 27%, since ten years ago the 30% was renewable.

The autonomies in which it has increased the most since 2012 are Castilla y León (40%), Aragón (32%) and Extremadura (22%). On the other hand, the production of renewable energies has decreased in Navarra (-21%), the Basque Country (-2.1%), the Valencian Community (-2%) and Catalonia (-0.9%), where in the two In recent years, gas combined cycles have increased their production. In Asturias there have hardly been any changes, going from a share of renewables of 18.44% in 2012 to 18.48% in 2022.
