On November 16, the General Director of Rosatom State Corporation Alexey Likhachev visited the Armenian NPP on the occasion of the modernization and extension of the operation period of the 2nd power unit of the plant until 2026.
This is a key project of Armenia and Russia in the field of atomic energy, the main tasks of which are the recovery of NPP reserves, increasing the level of safety and efficiency.
The modernization of the plant began in 2015, during which time the plant underwent a large amount of work to improve plant safety, inspect and replace equipment, resulting in a 15 percent increase in power unit capacity with the same cost of nuclear fuel. One of the most important measures carried out at the NPP is the smelting of the reactor body, which allowed to restore the properties of the metal by 85 percent.
“I am proud that we are participating in a project that helped make the NPP safer and more efficient. Together, we, a team of Armenian NPP specialists, repair companies, research institutes, design and construction organizations of Armenia and Russia, as well as professionals of factories manufacturing equipment for nuclear power plants, have carried out a huge volume of equipment replacement and modernization works. “Thanks to the implementation of a whole complex of activities of the 2nd power unit of the Armenian NPP, power unit №2 meets the most modern international requirements, and the Armenian NPP will continue to reliably provide electricity to the people of Armenia,” said the General Director of Rosatom State Corporation. According to the results of studies and inspections carried out by specialists of Rosatom enterprises, the technical parameters of power unit #2 of the Armenian NPP allow it to be operated for another 10 years.
“The Armenian NPP plays a decisive role in ensuring the energy security and independence of our country. “We are not going to stop there and we are setting new goals. it is the extension of the period of operation of the Armenian NPP by 10 years after 2026 and the further development of the sector, the construction of a new nuclear power station,” explained Minister Sanosyan.
General Director of NPP CJSC Eduard Martirosyan, First Deputy General Director of Armenian NPP Movses Vardanyan, Chief Engineer of NPP Artur Grigoryan, and Rusatom Service from the Russian side took part in the events organized within the framework of the visit to “Armenian Atomic Power Plant” CJSC. Representatives of JSC (key contractor of modernization works at NPP): Yevgeny Salkov, General Director Vladimir Bredov, Deputy General Director for Management of Complex Projects Department Yuri Sviridenko.
During the event, the results of the modernization project of the Armenian NPP were summarized, the prospects of extending the service life of the plant after 2026, as well as the prospects of building a new plant were discussed.
