Meeting at an inter-union meeting on Tuesday, the SNCF unions did not validate the idea of a strike at Christmas to put pressure on management on the issue of wages, we learned from union sources.

The idea of a social movement during the end-of-year holidays had been floated by Sud-Rail, the group’s third union, to “build a powerful mobilization, exclusively on the subject of wages”.

The union therefore convened an inter-union meeting to address the issue. According to several participants in the meeting, the CGT-Cheminots, Unsa-Ferroviaire and the CFDT-Cheminots all rejected the possibility of striking at Christmas.

“We agreed to meet again in January to perhaps build a movement on wages at that time,” a union source told AFP. SNCF management has proposed an “average increase” in salaries of 4.6% for the year 2024, including a 1.8% general increase.

Low mobilization

According to another participant in the meeting, the railway federations agreed to write a letter to the management of the railway group, demanding the opening of obligatory annual negotiations (NAO) for the year 2025 from the first quarter 2024. A way to maintain pressure on management on the issue of remuneration.

Sud-Rail could not be reached immediately but it is unlikely to see the union launch a strike movement alone, especially given the weak mobilization during the last days of strike at the SNCF, reported a union leader .

All the unions were also received by management on Tuesday to address the issue of financial compensation granted to railway workers during the Olympic Games period. The latter are strongly encouraged to postpone their summer holidays to ensure sufficient transport availability for the duration of the competition. “The negotiations are only just beginning and we have agreed to meet again at the beginning of January,” reported a participant in the meeting.
