The data from the Istituto Superiore di Sanit refer to the effectiveness in preventing both symptomatic and asymptomatic disease. With the third dose, the protection against the development of severe symptoms rises to 93%. The unvaccinated are 16 times more likely to die than those vaccinated with three doses

L’Higher Institute of Health today, Saturday 11 December, published its new extended weekly report, updated to 7 December. The document, as always, contains extremely important official data on the progress of the pandemic and the protection offered by vaccines against Covid.

According to the ISS report, the current epidemiological situation, at European level, is characterized by high and rapidly growing incidence levels, while the mortality rate continues to grow slowly. And although countries with the lowest vaccination coverage are the most severely affected, there is evidence of increased concern even in countries with higher vaccination coverage: the Omicron variant is detected in an increasing number of EU countries, some of which now they signal community broadcast.

As for Italy, in the last three weeks there has been an increase in the weekly incidence in all age groups, but from the second decade of October there is an increase in the incidence in the age brackets 0-19 and 10-19. , which in the last week has reached values of more than 250 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants for the 0-9 year range. In detail, in the 6-11 age group there is a greater increase in the incidence compared to the rest of the school age population, with a surge in the last two weeks.

In this context, continues the ISS, it is particularly important to continue the vaccination campaign – and the data on vaccination coverage and on the need to proceed quickly with third doses become particularly relevant.

The report explains that the overall effectiveness of vaccines in avoiding contagion is currently 65%; in avoiding hospitalizations by 88.7%; in avoiding ICU admissions, by 93.5%; in avoiding deaths by 89.2 percent.

But five months after the completion of the anti Covid vaccination cycle (therefore after two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca vaccines, or after one of Johnson & Johnson vaccine) there is a sharp decrease in the vaccine efficacy in preventing diagnoses – i.e. contagion – in correspondence of all age groups: in general, the effectiveness in preventing the disease, both in the symptomatic and asymptomatic form, drops from 74% (with a complete cycle within 5 months) to 39.6% (with a complete cycle for over 5 months.

Two important notes must be noted: on the one hand, the effectiveness in preventing the most severe cases of the disease remains high: 93% in those vaccinated for less than 5 months, and decreases to 84% in those vaccinated with a full cycle. for over five months.

On the other hand, the effectiveness in preventing the diagnosis and cases of severe disease goes back to 76.7% and 93% respectively in subjects vaccinated with the third dose.

Today’s data show a worsening compared to what was reported by the same Institute about a month ago, in November. In that report, the ISS estimated the effectiveness to drop from 80 to 59% for infections and from 95 to 82% for severe disease.

In the same report, we read that the risk of dying of an unvaccinated is 16.6 times greater than that of a vaccinated with the third dose; 11.1 times greater than a person vaccinated for less than 5 months; 6.9 times higher than that of a person who has been vaccinated for more than 5 months who has not yet received the third dose.

In the age group 0-19, 48,503 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported, of which 167 hospitalized and 2 hospitalized in intensive care in seven days.
