In the strict sense of the word, the new Israeli ELM-2084 type mobile gap-filling radar of the Hungarian Defense Forces is literally on the horizon next to the settlement of Kup, where the wooded, dense and hilly panorama is broken by the image of a new device with an unusual shape, reported the LHSN.hu Facebook page.
According to the paper, based on what has been seen, it seems that the new equipment has arrived and has probably been put into operation at the radar squadron of the MH Air Operations Command and Control Center, eleven pieces of which were purchased by the national defense within the framework of the National Defense and Force Development Program.
Like that the Magyar Nemzet has already written about it, the contract for the procurement of ELM-2084 airspace control, air defense and artillery reconnaissance radars was signed in December 2020 by Colonel-General Ferenc Korom, the then commander of the Hungarian Defense Forces, and Stéphane Oehrli, the president and CEO of Rheinmetall Canada Inc., in the framework of the Zrínyi National Defense and Force Development Program. The old Soviet P-37, PRV-17 and SZT-68U radio locators of the national defense are replaced with equipment containing the “active phase-controlled” (AESA) radar technology of the Israeli company IAI ELTA.
In addition to the procurement of locators, the two parties also agreed on industrial cooperation.
According to the plans, the production of individual parts of the military equipment and their complete final assembly will be carried out in Hungary, in Nyírtelek, a factory specialized in air defense systems of the Hungarian army.
The system integration of the new Israeli locators is carried out by the Canadian subsidiary of the German military industrial concern Rheinmetall, which is closely linked to the Hungarian military development. The reason is that the IAI ELTA equipment is already in service in the NATO-allied North American country.
