In French rap, few artists will have pushed introspection as far as Rémy, almost 27 years old, who is going on tour on January 12 to present his latest album, The Guardian’s Son, released in November. In the United States, his American counterparts, like Eminem with Cleanin’Out My Closet or Kid Cudi with Down & Out, spoke openly in their songs about their complicated relationships with their mother or their suicidal thoughts.

More modest, French rappers rarely talk about their parents, except to pay homage to them. Only JoeyStarr had castigated his father in Do not let your son hang. On the other hand, talking about your lack of maternal love, your struggle against being overweight, is rare, very rare. Rémy Camus took on the task, the son of the caretaker of an HLM in Aubervilliers, who weighed up to 162 kilos.

With his first album, It’s Remy (2018), the young rapper won a gold record. The little blond with blue eyes, however, does not fit the canons of the genre: obese more than muscular, sincere more than gangster and much more agile on stage than his healthy colleagues. Next Remy d’Auber (2019) et Camus (2022). With each new clip, her silhouette becomes more refined and her style asserts itself. In his new record, he loudly claims his mother’s job: a social housing caretaker who takes out and puts away the trash, remains attentive to the tenants, but shows little tenderness towards her boy, whom she student alone.

In the introductory track of his album, The truth, Rémy, in constant reflection to determine where to place the cursor between authenticity and the need to protect his family, admits to having hesitated for a long time to tell his whole story. “You can never tell the whole truth, he summarizes. I didn’t want to talk about the betrayals in the music industry, about what was done to me… out of modesty, but I did it so that my fans understood why I had disappeared. And then I didn’t just want to talk about what had happened to me professionally, but also to talk about my weight, my relationship with my mother. »

“I’m starting to think I’m a handsome guy”

The rapper admits to having taken refuge in his room for a long time when he was 16, to avoid the gaze of others. Getting away from his mother was more difficult. ” A day, he remembers, I was in the kitchen, she was smoking her cigarette, she said to me: “Rémy, you have to do something.” I sent her for a walk and she started crying. “I’m ashamed of you, do you realize?” And that touched me because she didn’t cry often. That evening I went out and started boxing, in winter, in shorts. I started by losing 10 kilos like that. »
