The relegation battle over as Tottenham piled the pressure on Aston Villa ahead of Monday’s game

by time news

A total of eight Premier League matches were on Saturday’s menu. Seven of the matches have now been played, and in the relegation battle it is now almost decided. All three teams that came up from the Championship last season go straight down to level two again.

Sheffield United’s hopes have been out for quite some time, while Burnley had to win away to Tottenham to keep alive their dream of survival. They started well, but Tottenham hit back and won after four straight losses. They put pressure on Aston Villa in the top four match before Liverpool visit Villa Park on Monday evening.

Luton also had hopes of keeping their place. They led 1-0 away to West Ham at half-time, but, like Burnley, were victims of a turnaround. West Ham won 3-1, and Luton are now virtually relegated to the Championship. They can get as many points as Nottingham Forest, but with a goal difference of minus 31 to minus 18 it is impossible. If Forest take points at home against Chelsea on Saturday night, it’s over.

In the battle for play in Europe, Newcastle managed just one point at home against Brighton. This means that Chelsea and Manchester United have the opportunity to hook up again in the battle for sixth place.

Crystal Palace won yet again under Robert Glasner and could end up securing a place in the top half of the table if everything goes their way towards the end of the season. Most teams now have just one game left to play, while some have a tie in midweek.

All the results so far Saturday:

Fulham – Manchester City 0-4
Bournemouth – Brentford 1-2
Everton – Sheffield United 1-0
Newcastle – Brighton 1-1
Tottenham – Burnley 2-1
West Ham – Luton 3-1
Wolves – Crystal Palace 1-3

Nottingham Forest – Chelsea will be played at 6.30pm.
