Valve had good success with the launch of the Steam Deck, but a lot has happened since the beginning of 2022. This portable console-PC has a processor with an iGPU that could have been fine when it should have gone on sale, in mid-2021 , but it came out quite fair and is little for the most current games. Valve continues to work on improving its performance via SteamOS updates, and version 3.5 has gotten a good boost. Still, many have their sights set on a renewal, but it won’t happen anytime soon.

In an interview with Pierre-Loup Griffais, one of the main people responsible for the Steam Deck, he indicated that they are not going to follow the console renewal cycle. Because it is not a console, but a PC. But they are not going to follow the PC renewal cycle either because the integration between SteamOS and the hardware of the Steam Deck must be maximum, and that takes time.

What he has said is that they will renew the Steam Deck when it has clearly fallen short to move the games, and according to him that will likely happen within two years. After which, and not necessarily in just two years, there will be a “Steam Deck 2.” In the meantime, I’m not sure how much more Valve will be able to squeeze out of the Steam Deck through SteamOS improvements. But the need to sell the console will sharpen the ingenuity of its programmers like Pierre-Loup Griffais, from which all Linux gamers ultimately benefit.
