China’s housing crisis has led to an unconventional solution for one Shanghai man, as he has turned his car into a home to escape skyrocketing rents. Wang Hong, a 30-year-old resident of Shanghai, has been living in his car for the past three months, avoiding the high cost of renting in one of China’s major cities.
Despite having a decent job and salary, Wang made the choice to live in his car as a way to avoid supporting a landlord’s family with his earnings. He was previously paying 3,000 yuan (Rs 35,000) a month for a room before making the decision to convert his car into a home.
Since his lease expired in September 2023, Wang has been converting his small vehicle into a home without seeking out another flat. According to Wang, the vehicle fulfills 99 percent of his daily needs, including warmth during the winter. He has even integrated a small ventilator into the car to improve air quality.
While living in a car has its challenges, including not having a permanent address, Wang claims to have saved Rs 1.20 lakh so far by shifting to this new living arrangement.
Wang is not alone in his unconventional living situation, as reports indicate that the trend of converting vehicles into homes is growing in China’s major cities. As rents continue to soar, more individuals are turning to motor homes as a practical and cost-effective housing solution.
It seems the housing crisis in China is driving many residents to think outside the box when it comes to finding affordable living arrangements. With rent prices continuing to rise, the trend of motor homes as homes may continue to spread across the country.
