The Russian Foreign Ministry named who will be primarily affected by retaliatory sanctions

Ruslan Golubovsky, deputy director of the consular department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that Russia’s retaliatory sanctions against the West would primarily affect officials of other states, but could also apply to ordinary citizens. This is how he commented on the bill aimed at amending the federal law on measures to influence persons involved in violations of fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights and freedoms of citizens of the Russian Federation.

During the discussion of the law, Mr. Golubovsky noted that “the current version of the law and the draft law operate with the concept of “citizens””. “But first of all, this refers to officials who make such decisions, but are not limited to them (the bill.— “b”),” the official said at a meeting of the Federation Council committee on constitutional legislation and state construction (TASS quote). He added that the sanctions lists should also be made more public.

In its current version, the law allows Americans to be banned from entering Russia, to seize their financial assets on Russian territory, and to prohibit them from any transactions with property and investments. The activities of legal entities under their control in Russia may be suspended, as well as their powers in the boards of directors and other management bodies of organizations registered in Russia. The amendments intend to extend these restrictions to citizens of any foreign states, as well as to stateless persons.

On February 24, President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a military special operation in Ukraine. In response, Western countries have imposed unprecedented sanctions against Russia. The blacklists included Russian banks and financial institutions, as well as politicians, entrepreneurs, journalists and other public figures. They were denied entry, their property seized and their assets frozen.
