The British musical “Six” about the six wives of Tudor King Henry VIII became a surprise success and can now be seen in Munich for the first time. A feminist fireworks display.

München.

Divorced, beheaded, died. Divorced, beheaded, survived. The fate of the six wives of the infamous English King Henry VIII has been described many times and their story has been told countless times. Or? In the evening, the musical “Six” celebrated an acclaimed Munich premiere at the Deutsches Theater. And it asks the question whether it is really the story of Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr that is known from history books, historical novels, series and films – or whether it is as traditionally they are more marginal figures from the life of the Tudor king.

This male-dominated narrative questions and turns the British musical, which is currently making its first appearance in Germany and was already seen in Berlin before the Munich premiere, into question and upends it. The six women finally tell their own stories – after initially competing over which of them King Henry did the most harm – to show that they are more than just the (ex-)wife of.

The musical finally culminates in the following interpretation: The infamous monarch – who had two of his wives beheaded, fell out with the Pope over his first divorce and marriage to Anne Boleyn and then made himself head of his own, new, Anglican church – is He did not become as famous as he is today because of this turning point in church history, but actually only because of his six wives.

There was great cheering and long applause from the Munich audience for this funny, creative, fast-paced, feminist fireworks display. It can be seen at the Deutsches Theater in the Bavarian capital until April 7th. It will then be shown in Zurich from April 9th to 21st. (dpa)
