Kanakalakshmi was the one who added Ilanji to Tenkasi district. Being a disabled person, he developed an insatiable love for basketball. After that, despite his disability, he took up basketball training from a wheelchair.
Hard work, dedication and passion to achieve gave him a new impetus. Varlam started to flourish as a top player in wheelchair basketball competitions at the state level.
He participated in state and national level competitions and won medals. He participated in national competitions held in Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Erode and Punjab and won medals without fail.

Kanakalakshmi has participated in two international competitions. He has participated in international camp twice. This year he participated in international competitions held in Noida and won the silver medal by defeating Nepal.
It is noteworthy that Kanakalakshmi is the only woman who participated for the Indian team.
