There is still a long way to go before global recognition. But a new stage has just been reached for the megaliths of Carnac (Morbihan), which dream of including their name on the UNESCO world heritage list. In a press release, the Paysages de megalithes association, which is piloting the project, announces that “the French State has issued a favorable opinion on the submission of an application file”.

This green light comes after the last hearing of the members of the association before the committee of French world heritage properties, on October 10. The next step will take place in January with the official submission of the application for the Breton site, known worldwide for its alignments of menhirs. “The international process of evaluation and expertise of the files will then be put in place for a period of eighteen months, until the summer of 2025”, specifies the association, which includes in its application project the banks of Morbihan.

France currently has 52 properties listed as UNESCO world heritage sites, including Mont-Saint-Michel, the Pont du Gard, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin and the Cordouan lighthouse. In September, the Maison Carrée of Nîmes, the funeral and memorial sites of the First World War and the volcanoes and forests of Mount Pelée and the Pitons of northern Martinique were included in this prestigious list.
