The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel recently referred to the Turkish President’s accusations of genocide in Gaza. “The president of Turkey, which has a history of Armenian Genocide, boasts that he has handed over materials accusing Israel of genocide to the Hague Court.”

In a conversation with Aysor.am, Sergey Melkonyan, an expert of the APRI research center, candidate of historical sciences, international expert, Israel expert, comments that the statement of the Israeli Foreign Ministry does not express the real state policy of Israel. At the state level, Israel will never allow the Armenian Genocide to be identified with the Holocaust, Israel needs the Holocaust to be perceived as something exceptional, because it is the most important component of both the state and national identity of Israel.

“The issue of the Armenian Genocide is brought to the agenda by the representatives of the left or central camp, but they are never the majority. In recent years, the right-wing, religious camps rule in Israel, and for them, the issue of the Armenian Genocide is not on the agenda. For the sake of justice, it should be noted that monuments are placed in Israeli cities, but it is mainly done to please the Armenian community.

Israel does not recognize the Armenian Genocide due to its relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan. Turkey was the first Muslim country to recognize Israel as a state, however, especially since 2010, relations between the two countries deteriorated.

The international expert emphasizes that Turkey continues to position itself as one of the leaders of the Muslim world, as well as one of the main power centers in the Middle East, where the interests of Israel and Turkey collide. “Nevertheless, Turkey does not take any direct action against Israel, Iran, for example, called on Muslim countries to stop supplying oil, thanks to which Israel’s military machine operates in Gaza. Azerbaijan supplies oil to Israel through the territory of Turkey, Turkey does not take any steps in this direction.

It is important to emphasize that Turkey never takes practical, serious steps against Israel, often on the contrary. In the third Artsakh war in 2020, Israel and Turkey were in the same camp, these countries also cooperate in the field of intelligence in the region, they carry out joint operations against the Iranian network, but this does not mean that relations are not tense.
