Towards the end of the congress of the Union of Theater Workers, which had been proceeding smoothly until now, there was an unexpected shake-up. Earlier today, Vladimir Mashkov was elected as the new chairman of the STD – he replaced Alexander Kalyagin, who had headed the Union since 1998.
Towards the end of the congress, the question arose of abolishing the position of “first deputy chairman of the STD” and introducing a new one: “co-chairman”.
This means that now the Union of Theater Workers will have two chairmen, one responsible for “drama”, the second for musical theater.
“I would like to do everything possible to make everyone feel good,” Mashkov said in his final speech. And he proposed to approve the head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters, Valery Gergiev, as co-chairman of musical theater. The decision was made by a majority vote.
