The new series, based on Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name, is set to debut on Disney+ in April and promises to expand the dystopian world of Gilead, shifting focus to the experiences of women at its highest echelons. The premiere brought together key cast and creative figures, offering a first look at a story poised to resonate with both longtime fans and new viewers.
The series follows Agnes, played by Chase Infiniti, and Daisy (Lucy Halliday), as they navigate the complex and often brutal world within the walls of Aunt Lydia’s school – an institution dedicated to training the next generation of wives in Gilead. “The Testaments” isn’t simply a continuation of the original series’ narrative; it’s a deliberate broadening of scope, exploring the power dynamics and hidden rebellions within a seemingly monolithic regime. Ann Dowd, reprising her iconic role as Aunt Lydia, spoke passionately about her connection to the character during the festival. “I love her,” Dowd said. “That’s our job as actors. The first rule is: do not judge. I don’t judge her, and she has become a very dear friend of mine. I came to grasp her, she came to know me, and I couldn’t be more grateful.” Dowd described the experience of returning to the role as “the great pleasure and the great joy, a privilege, all of it.”
Expanding the World of Gilead
Creator Bruce Miller emphasized that “The Testaments” will offer a different perspective on Gilead than its predecessor. “’The Handmaid’s Tale’ covered people who are at the bottom of Gilead, and this shows women who are at the top of Gilead,” he explained to the audience at Series Mania. “But it also shows how for women, the top and the bottom are very similar.” This exploration of power structures and the subtle ways oppression manifests across different social strata is a central theme of the new series.
Halliday, who joined Dowd at the festival, highlighted the wealth of source material available to the cast and crew. “We had such strong source material ready,” she said, referencing both Atwood’s novel and the established world-building of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” She also praised the collaborative environment fostered by the show’s creative team, including Miller and executive producer Elisabeth Moss. “Bruce is so open and willing to have a conversation,” Halliday recalled. “That really created a wonderful environment where you felt reassured these people have trusted me and given me the space to step into it.”
The costumes, a defining element of both “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “The Testaments,” also played a significant role in the actors’ preparation. Infiniti discussed how the meticulously crafted garments helped her embody her character. “For all of us, since we are wearing a variety of costumes in the show, it’s your first piece of armor,” she said. “All of our costumes were made to fit us perfectly, but they can be restrictive at times. It helped to acquire into the physicality of our roles.”
A Somber Note Amidst Celebration
Whereas the premiere was a moment of celebration for the cast and crew, a somber undercurrent ran through the festival. Juror Ida Panahandeh was unable to attend Series Mania due to the ongoing conflict in her home country, and sent a message to the audience expressing her solidarity with artists facing oppression around the world.

Panahandeh’s message underscored the importance of artistic freedom and the role of culture in challenging injustice. “Whenever soldiers begin crossing their country’s borders, artists suddenly locate themselves forbidden to exit theirs,” she wrote. “It’s a bitter irony, isn’t it?” Her words resonated deeply with the audience, reminding them of the real-world stakes of the stories being told on screen.
The Power of Storytelling in a Divided World
Series Mania Managing Director Laurence Herszberg echoed Panahandeh’s sentiments, emphasizing the vital role of culture in a world grappling with violence and division. “In a world rife with violence coming from all sides and deepening divisions, We see essential to remember the role of culture – as a source of guidance and enlightenment – and the role of festivals as a place where we can come together when everything else is in flux,” she stated during the opening ceremony. Herszberg stressed that Series Mania provides a platform for artists to express themselves freely, regardless of their nationality.
Producer Warren Littlefield added that despite the darkness inherent in the story, it’s “critical to have humanity.” He explained, “We live in a world that’s a dark place, and hope comes from their strength and their resilience. These young women have an awakening in our season one, and they will come to fight it. Let’s hope they take it down.”
The premiere of “The Testaments” at Series Mania marks a significant moment for the franchise and for television storytelling.
