He Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid hosts the exhibition these days ‘The cultural journey of the Balearic Islands’, inaugurated this Tuesday by the president of the Balearic government, Marga Prohens, in an event which was attended by the main authorities of the archipelago and a wide representation of the cultural world of Madrid. The sample includes a selection of works from the museum that have travel as a common theme. The exhibition can be seen in the Mirador area of ​​the museum, usually closed to the public, and it features works by Joan Miró, a universal painter closely linked to Mallorca. During the inauguration, a quartet from the Balearic Symphony Orchestra performed some ‘Sound Impressions of the Balearic Islands’, with works by authors from the islands.

The president of the island government also took advantage of the event to present the digitization project of the Casa Planas archive and to express her commitment to the recovery of more than three million images linked to the tourist development of Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands from the 50s of the last century. Some emblematic photographs from this collection are also shown in the exhibition.

Casa Planas, the photography house of reference in Mallorca for decades, was founded by Josep Planas i Montanyà, an entrepreneur who knew how to see and embody with his camera the relationship between tourism and the image, thus leaving testimony to the whole tourist development of the Balearic Islands. His granddaughter, Marina Planas, has recovered the archive of the family business, which constitutes material of great patrimonial value for the history of the Balearic Islands. “The administrations have the obligation to protect this archive as part of our historical and cultural heritage”pointed out Marga Prohens.
