The break between Sumar and Podemos has had the first palpable consequence for the Government. Ione Belarra’s party took advantage of the total freedom of movement that his departure from the Mixed Group gives him to force the negotiation to the maximum and end up overturning the unemployment benefit reform designed by the Ministry of Labor. What happened on Wednesday is just the first proof that the legislature will be an even more winding road for the new progressive coalition.
The extraordinary plenary session of Congress made clear the difficulties that the Government will have to pass each law: an agonizing negotiation, a lost decree and two others saved by just one vote. The result even forced a second vote because a mistake by a deputy had caused a tie. But against the initial forecast, it was not finally the independentists who overturned a Government measure for the first time, but Podemos.
