The increase in the price of sugar in recent days is at least surprising, because a similar situation cannot be created in a market with several players and a dominant economic operator, said economist Karlen Khachatryan in a conversation with Aysor.am reporter.

“In my opinion, here we are actually dealing with certain organized steps, while the relevant body, the Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition, is directly inactive and does not perform its functions.
If any entity doing business in any market has a dominant position, then TMPSU should control not only the price policy, but also the terms of product delivery, etc. In other words, it cannot be the case that a company with a dominant position decides on its whim that it no longer imports the given product,” said the economist.

According to Karlen Khachatryan, the final goal of creating an artificial deficit in the sugar market is to increase the price of the given product.

“I think that small batches of sugar are delivered to stores, which will lead to some excitement among consumers, the demand for sugar will increase. Contrary to the habit of buying 1-2 kg of sugar, people will try to buy 10-15 kg at once, which will inevitably lead to an increase in the price of sugar. Businessmen, in turn, will receive super profit. Let’s remember that the same thing happened in the egg market in April,” said Karlen Khachatryan.

Let’s remind that in recent days one kilogram of sugar is sold in the range of 420-450 drams. A similar picture was recorded in the sugar market in July. in supermarkets they refused to sell 2-3 kg more sugar to citizens, besides, the price of that product increased from 360 drams to 400 drams.
