Saarbrücken is a name that doesn’t usually make it into the average fan’s itinerary, but this season is different. What a time! With a regular trajectory in the third division, it is in the cup that has left the whole of Germany stunned. This Tuesday, it happened again.

Away from the big stage since, in 1993, he was last relegated to the Bundesliga (five participations), FC Saarbrücken once again experiences moments of glory in an unlikely way. Always eliminating teams from higher levels.

It started with Karlsruher SC (2-1), from the second tier, with a goal in the 90th minute, and then the level was always at its highest. Bayern blushed with shame (the same one), with a turnaround achieved in stoppage time (2-1) and, in the round of 16, it was Eintracht Frankfurt who fell into modesty – but to the pine cone – Ludwigspark Stadium, por 2-0.

There were more than enough warnings for Borussia Mönchengladbach…

Weigl and company without an antidote

The quarter-finals had almost all been played. Bayer Leverkusen went through and booked a home match against Fortuna Düsseldorf – from the second division, although with a draw in which they have not faced any team from the first division so far. In the other game, Kaiserslautern (also in the second tier) progressed. A team needed to be defined and the scenario looked very attractive for the historic Gladbach to return to glory.

But the unthinkable – or not – happened again. Julian Weigl’s team started well, with an early goal, but had a response soon after, when Naïfi equalized the challenge.

Lots of ball for the first division champions, more shots and corners, although Saarbrücken was well aware of what they had to do to try something new. It happened… in stoppage time, of course, when striker Kai Brünker completed a counterattack and added another delicious piece of glory in this epic campaign for the team coached by Rüdiger Ziehl.

There follows an unlikely semi-final against the close Kaiserslautern (65kms separate the two cities) and the fight for a ticket to the final. The fairy tale continues!
