The United States and the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Iran on Thursday, targeting “Iran’s marching programme, the steel industry and car manufacturers” after last weekend’s attack on Israel, the US Treasury Department announced.
Washington’s sanctions target “16 individuals and two entities working to produce Iranian drones,” including Shahed drones that “were used during the April 13 attack.” London’s sanctions target “many Iranian military organizations, individuals and entities involved in the manufacture of Iranian drones and ballistic missiles.”
US President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the new sanctions aim to punish Iran for threatening stability in the region.
Biden explained that the sanctions target leaders and entities associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, noting that he directed his team, including the Treasury Department, to impose sanctions that weaken the Iranian military industry.
The US President said that the US allies will issue sanctions and additional steps in response to Iran’s weapons programs and its threat to stability, stressing that Washington is working in coordination with the G7 countries.
It is expected that the G7 countries – France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Japan – will demand the imposition of individual sanctions targeting people involved in the Iranian missile supply chain, according to an Italian diplomatic source.
European Union leaders decided on Wednesday to impose new sanctions targeting companies that produce drones and missiles, against the backdrop of the attack launched by Iran last weekend, which caused minor damage after the majority of the projectiles were intercepted.
On Saturday night, Iran launched an attack on Israel with hundreds of drones and missiles in response to a strike that destroyed its consulate building in Damascus and killed seven members of the Revolutionary Guard, including two senior officers, on April 1.
