US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said that Washington welcomes the formation of a new Palestinian government and looks forward to working with it for peace, security and prosperity in the region.
Miller said in a statement published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “We support the appointment of a new government for the Palestinian National Authority that serves the interests of the Palestinian people.”
The diplomat added: Washington is counting on cooperation with the new Palestinian government to enhance peace, security and prosperity in the region, and also expects the new government to implement “credible reforms.”
At the end of last February, former Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh submitted a request to Abbas to resign from his government.
The request came amid reports of continuing negotiations between Palestinian factions, including Hamas, to form a unified Palestinian government.
