A strategy based fundamentally on raising standards in credible fear interviews will be part of the changes in asylum policy announced by the Joe Biden administration.

The projection is to toughen the processes for the thousands of migrants who request refuge every day in this territory, especially in these interviews, as a determining factor when opting for political asylum.

But everything will depend on the approval of a budget to implement the changes, otherwise the White House will not be able to implement its initiatives. In fact, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) deficit exceeds $500 million.

What is known is that the White House is evaluating how it will implement the new restrictions on asylum policy. In this sense, it is considered to introduce the modifications through an executive order, since the other would be a federal regulation, which may take months to be approved.

ICE, for its part, is preparing to prioritize recently arrived immigrants in deportation processes, applying the so-called “last in, first out” policy.

Joe Biden has already announced his willingness to close the border with Mexico immediately, but that is only possible if Congress presents a negotiated agreement between Democrats and Republicans to confront the serious immigration crisis.
