Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden and his Filipino counterpart Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will hold a trilateral summit in Washington on April 11. Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet of Ministers Yoshimasa Hayashi announced this at a press conference in Tokyo, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“In addition to the meeting between the leaders of Japan and the United States in Washington on April 10, we also plan to hold a trilateral summit with the President of the Philippines the following day on April 11. As the international community approaches a historic turning point, Japan is committed to further strengthening cooperation with the United States and the Philippines to support and strengthen an open international order based on the rule of law,” he said.

As the Kyodo agency notes, this week in Tokyo there will be consultations between representatives of the Foreign Ministries of the three countries in order to prepare for the upcoming summit.

Negotiations between Kishida and US President Joe Biden in Washington are scheduled for April 10. At them, the parties plan to discuss strengthening both bilateral cooperation and interaction with partners in the Indo-Pacific region.

One of these partners is the Philippines, with which Japan has recently been actively developing relations. Thus, in November 2023, the Japanese prime minister and the Philippine president agreed to increase cooperation in the defense sector, including in a trilateral format with the United States, and to begin negotiations on an agreement that would simplify the deployment of the two countries’ military forces on each other’s territory for exercises.
