The Spanish Heart Society (SEC) and the Spanish Heart Foundation (FEC) have warned that the intense heatlike the one we are already experiencing in April, can make your heart beat faster and the arteries and veins to dilate, so the blood pressure drops.

“The heat, if it is very intense, causes the heart to beat faster and the arteries and veins to dilate, with which It lowers your blood pressure a bit.” explained the president of the SEC, Julián Pérez-Villacastín, through a statement.

In this case, he has pointed out that patients who have heart problems and who are taking drugs that dilate the arteries, or diuretics that cause fluid to be lost, “they may be more tired and need medical consultation if, for example, they sweat a lot and become dehydrated.

“They may find themselves more tired”

In any case, the cardiologist has pointed out that “usually this does not happen if one is not exposed to very high temperatures“, like the ones we are encountering this week.

As advice in the face of this heat wave, cardiologists urge, first of all, to continue taking the medication as prescribed by the doctor. In addition, they encourage trying do not expose yourself excessively to the sun; not exercising in very hot hours; stay hydrated and eat fresh food, as well as get adequate rest.

In the same way, one should avoid tobacco, alcohol consumption and sugary drinks. “If you are going to travel, choose the appropriate means of transport. If you go by car, it is advisable to make stops every 200 km, to stretch your legs; and if you travel by plane, train or boat, it is advisable take some walks to avoid suffering the economy class syndrome”, they conclude.
