Catherine Smallwood, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) senior emergency officer, has said that congestion in the host cities of the 2020 European Football Championship has led to an increase in new cases of the coronavirus.

A representative of the organization believes that the lack of restrictions on fans will lead to a new wave of the epidemic.

“We have to look not only at the stadiums themselves. We have to look at how people get there, how they travel in crowded bus lines. When they leave the stadiums, they go to packed bars and pubs,” Smallwood was quoted as saying by Inside the Games.

The European Championship has been postponed from 2020 to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

During the championship this year, for example, there were no restrictions on fans at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, and up to 61,000 people could attend matches in Hungary.

Last week, the UK government announced that more than 60,000 fans would attend the semi-final and final matches.
