The World Council of Churches expressed support to the Armenian people

On November 8-14, the meeting of the executive committee of the World Council of Churches (WCC) was held in Abuja (Nigeria). The congregations, based on the 2023 decision of the CES delegation. the report of the visit to Armenia on September 18-22, made a statement.

The ECC expresses its support to the Armenian people, the Church and especially to all those who in 2023 after the tragic events of September 19-20, they had to flee from their ancient homeland, Nagorno Karabakh.

The congregation also expressed regret that in 1992-1994 After the Nagorno-Karabakh war, no ways were found to ensure stable peace in the region.

The CES calls on the international community to provide humanitarian support to displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh, particularly vulnerable groups: women, children, the elderly, the disabled and the needy.

The Council members also call on the government of Azerbaijan to guarantee the safety and equal rights of those ethnic Armenians who want to return to their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh, to protect the Armenian ethnic cultural and religious heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh, to respect the freedom of religion, belief (including visiting religious and worship places), and to enable and facilitate the visit of an independent UNESCO assessment mission to the region and document the status of the relevant sites.

The delegates appealed to the European Union to strengthen the EU mission in Armenia by providing sufficient personnel and resources to observe and report on the invasion of the sovereign territories of Armenia by the armed forces of Azerbaijan.

The Council of Europe calls on the UN Security Council to resolve the issue and to take quick and decisive actions in case of any attack by the armed forces of Azerbaijan on the sovereign territory of Armenia.

The congregation asked the General Secretary of the Council of Europe to continuously monitor the 2023. to the observations and conclusions of the Council of Europe delegation that visited Armenia on September 18-22.

The ECC invited all the member Churches to pray for the injured persons, to support the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church in carrying out service to the Armenian people in these painful and uncertain times regarding the future.
