“The World of Tomorrow”, an “almost magical” series on French hip-hop

by time news

It would be an exaggeration to say that The world of tomorrow unleashes crowds in Germany. But the press across the Rhine devoted a few rather laudatory articles to this “energy-packed series on the beginnings of hip-hop in France”, to resume the daily formula Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The Arte channel is broadcasting the last three episodes this October 27. All six parts are already available on Arte.tv and will be until November 18, when it will switch to Netflix.

Directed by Katell Quillévéré and Hélier Cisterne, The world of tomorrow “is both a sympathetic biopic and the fascinating study of a medium”, summarizes the weekly Freitag. The series, whose action takes place between 1983 and 1991, reconstructs the beginnings of four pioneers of the French rap scene: Dee Nasty (played by Andranic Manet), a DJ to whom we owe the first self-produced rap album of the country, Paname City Rappin’ (1984); Didier Morville and Bruno Lopes, the future JoeyStarr and Kool Shen, founders of the Suprême NTM group (Melvin Boomer and Anthony Bajon); graffiti artist Virginie Sullé, alias Lady V. (Laïka Blanc-Francard).
