The Department of the Environment has issued an unfavorable environmental impact statement for the Graxón wind farm, in the municipality of A Pastoriza (Lugo), promoted by Greenalia Wind Power.

In the resolution, published this Thursday in the Official Gazette of Galicia (DOG), it is stated that the General Directorate of Natural Heritage identified that the flora and fauna of natural habitats “would be directly affected” by the wiring. Special attention is paid to the red kite (‘Milvus milvus’), an endangered species, with a “high probability of colliding” with wind infrastructure, which “would have significant population consequences.”

In this regard, Greenalia proposed that, in the event of a collision, specimens bred in captivity or from wildlife recovery centers would be reintroduced to compensate for the deaths of these birds.

Greenalia defended the superior public interest of the project to carry it out and assured that “it does not present significant adverse effects on the environment.” He also warns that he “sees the obligation” to inform that he “reserves legal action” for damages in the event of the rejection of the project.

The project for this 6.6 megawatt park was made up of a wind turbine and its associated infrastructure, with a budget of 5.5 million euros.

“Unassuming” risk

On the other hand, Natural Heritage found an “unaffordable” risk of collision for the red kite, since dozens of red kites are concentrated in a roost in the area.

And it points out that “the chosen position is incompatible with the necessary protection of the species listed in danger of extinction”, “Therefore, the project would be incompatible with the preservation of natural values, both reasons why the report is issued unfavorable,” he adds.
