The Euskal Herriko Gazte Orkestra (EGO) faithfully maintains the Christmas gathering for another year, and this year the young orchestra will work on two pieces: Rossini’s Overture La gazza ladra, and Brahms’s 4th symphony, two of the two composers’ most representative works. To prepare this repertoire, the young musicians will meet in Musikenen this week, and they will have the opportunity to get to know each other and rehearse for four days. This year, Unai Urrecho, a trombonist and conductor from Ararat, will be the guest conductor.

To say goodbye to the year, EGOK will offer four concerts with this program prepared these days. The first will be on Saturday, December 30, at the Leidor theater in Toulouse (8 p.m.). Next week they will have three more appointments: Tuesday, the 2nd, at the Victoria Eugenia Theater in Donostia (7:30 p.m.); on Wednesday, the 3rd, at the Principal theater in Gasteiz (7:30 p.m.) and on Thursday, the 4th, at the Euskalduna palace in Bilbao.

Young musician and conductor

EGO was founded by the Department of Culture of the Basque Government in 1997, and Unai Urrecho was the first member of the orchestra. “I remember very well the summer of 1997, how many young people we met and how excited we were, because it was a very good opportunity for us to get to know each other and make new friends.” At that time, “we had exceptional masters and making music under the direction of Juanjo Mena was very special”, admits Urrecho. Now he has returned “with great responsibility” to EGO as director, but he says he is ready to face this challenge. “I would like all young people to have the experience I had, because it was very helpful for me and I hope it will be the same for them.”

This year’s guest conductor emphasized the importance of youth orchestras in the education of musicians, “as it is a very good opportunity for young people to meet other talented musicians and new masters, and also to work on interesting repertoires”. According to Urrecho, “the young orchestra serves to cultivate human values. This is a nice opportunity for them to play together with others and learn to respect others, because empathy is needed to be a good musician.”
