The Zangezur section, as part of the “North-South” international transport corridor project, is currently not considered due to the lack of a final position by Armenia, as reported by “Interfax”, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk told reporters.

“Armenia is not part of the “North-South” corridor, so far they have not formed a final position regarding the planned road through Meghri,” said Overchuk.

According to him, Azerbaijan and Iran have actually already started the construction of the highway bypassing Armenia on the southern bank of the Araks River and actually signed a memorandum on the construction of the railway bypassing Armenia through the territory of Iran.

According to Overchuk, the option of building a road bypassing Armenia and passing through the territory of Iran to Nakhichevan, the exit of which is the border with Turkey, is slightly different in length from the road passing through Syunik.

“According to calculations, the length of the railway passing through the territory of Armenia will be 42 km, and the length of the railway through the territory of Iran will be about 50 km. This is the whole difference: two bridges and 8 km,” the Russian Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
