Like Pierre Gasly before him, the 20-year-old French driver will try to attract the attention of Formula 1.

Théo Pourchaire, newly titled Formula 2 world champion, will race for Toyota in Japanese Super Formula in 2024, the Japanese manufacturer announced on Tuesday.

The Frenchman will drive under the colors of Toyota Gazoo Racing at the wheel of his future single-seater in a championship renowned halfway between F2 and F1. The 20-year-old driver, a member of the Sauber Academy, will wear the number 19 in the Itochu Enex Team Impul team with whom he recently tested.

Pourchaire will aim to get noticed while waiting for a potential place in F1 in 2025, as did another Frenchman, Pierre Gasly. He failed in 2017 to half a point from the Super Formula title, the last two races having been canceled due to the weather.

The single-seaters in this category are powered by 2-liter turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder engines from Honda or Toyota and the championship lasts seven weeks with nine races in total. It will start in Suzuka on March 8 and 10 and end on November 22 and 24, still in Suzuka.
