“The Academy is the highest scientific center of the country, the official advisor of the RA government, which has passed a difficult and meaningful path over the course of 80 years, achieved great scientific achievements, received world recognition,” said Ashot Saghyan, president of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.
Academician Saghyan noted that during the years of the Soviet Union, the academy had significant achievements, took a leading role among the academies of sciences of the Soviet Union republics.
“The period of the real rise of the academy starts from the 1950s, when more than 40 scientific institutes were created in about two decades. Over the past 80 years, world-renowned research in the fields of physics, astronomy, mathematics, computing, mechanics, chemistry, and biology has been carried out at the academy. The researcher and decipherer of the present and historical heritage of Armenia is the department of Armenian studies and social sciences of the academy, to whose workers we are indebted for the discovery and study of exceptional and unique examples of world civilization. The generalized achievements of Armenian historians are the 8 volumes of the history of the Armenian people, the studies on the Armenian question and the Armenian Genocide,” said Ashot Saghyan.
He mentioned that NAS cooperates with academies of more than 40 countries. A new cooperation agreement with the “Kurchatov Institute” national research center is being prepared, the opening of the regional center of the Joint Nuclear Research Institute in Dubna at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia is being discussed.
Ashot Saghyan emphasized that it is necessary to implement the National Academy of Sciences reform program, to modernize the functions of the system, bringing them into line with the modern requirements of the development of science.
“Special attention should be paid to applied works arising from the needs of the Republic’s economy. It is necessary to activate the process of providing scientific-methodical and expert advice to state administration bodies, to introduce an effective system of reproduction of scientific personnel. There is a need to quickly and adequately respond to the new challenges caused by the 44-day war of 2020, the events of September 2023 and the forced depatriation of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh,” said Ashot Saghyan.
The president of RA NAS referred to the “Academic City” mega-project. “Importing the RA government’s initiative to develop and implement such a large-scale program, I consider it necessary to note that it should be carried out on the basis of substantively correct, in-depth professional discussions and analyzes in order not to disrupt the already established scientific traditions that have gained their unique place in the international scientific space. , the scientific system that has withstood the test of time for 80 years and received worldwide recognition in a number of fields of science. In the “Academic city” clusters, it is possible to involve those research organizations whose activities completely or excellently coincide with the functions of the given cluster. It will make it possible to separate fundamental and applied researches and to reserve the field of fundamental researches close to the heart of the National Academy of Sciences. I am sure that as a result of the implementation of the mentioned measures, it will be possible to preserve the best traditions of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and develop new ones for the benefit of the scientific-educational and scientific-technological progress of the Republic of Armenia, the development of the economy and the strengthening of the defense of the state,” said Ashot Saghyan.
