“For the moment, there is no question of the CGT joining us.” The message is clear and comes this Friday from the president of Young Farmers, Arnaud Gaillot. He was questioned about this on South Radio after a call launched by the workers’ union to its activists to “go and meet” the mobilized farmers.

“We have never joined social movements. We have never taken advantage of other social movements to explain our dismay,” underlines the head of the organization which, associated with the FNSEA, represents the majority of the profession. “We are not on the same battles, we are not on the same issues, there is no question of mixing subjects,” he added.

He does not want to take the risk that the agricultural question finds itself dissolved in the middle of broader struggles. Supporting his argument of difference in the struggles between the CGT and the Young Farmers, Arnaud Gaillot adds that “if it is a strategy of division, a strategy of drowning out the subject, that does not interest me”.

More generally, he explains that “there is a political recovery”. “We tell our members not to go easy on populism. The crisis facing us is complex. The one who will come and tell you on your blocked point or on TV that, thanks to him, everything will work out overnight, that’s false. »

“Everyone fights their own battles”

The CGT also suffered a similar refusal from the FNSEA. Tuesday evening, on BFMTV, its president Arnaud Rousseau said “he did not want political and union recovery”. “That the CGT leads its battles poses no problem to me. We have a clear message. We carry it. Everyone fights their own battles. »

In a message on Thursday, the CGT called on its members to “create the conditions allowing the demands of employees, agricultural workers and farmers to converge”. “These are the same people who are dragging down farmers’ incomes and exploiting employees in the agri-food industry and mass distribution,” Sophie Binet, general secretary of the CGT, declared this Friday on France 2. “Employees and farmers can unite to denounce these multinationals and these margins which are made at the expense of employees and farmers. »

The CGT is in contact with the Confédération paysanne, the third agricultural union in the country, classified on the left. According to Sophie Binet, CGT activists are well received at the dams where they go, in Ariège or in the English Channel for example.
