MAINTENANCE – The Twenty-Seven meet from Thursday to examine the candidacy of the country at war.

While a summit of the Twenty-Seven is convened on June 23, the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, defends, in an interview granted to several European newspapers including Le FigaroEU candidate status for Ukraine.

LE FIGARO. – The Commission pleads in favor of a candidate country status for Ukraine. Isn’t that too fast in view of the corruption that this country is experiencing?

Ursula VON DER LEYEN. – In addition to the judicial institutions that are in place, Ukraine has traveled a positive trajectory on almost all issues, whether it be the requirements of the Venice Commission for Democracy and Law (an advisory body of the Council of Europe, editor’s note) or the fight against corruption and against the oligarchy. It is the only country to have passed a law against oligarchs. There is still a lot of work to do and they are aware of it. We want results on corruption and oligarchy. Ukrainians are determined to step up digitalization…
