On December 13, RA NA Speaker Alen Simonyan received Canada’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Armenia Andrew Turner.

Congratulating the ambassador on assuming the responsible position, Alen Simonyan expressed his belief that the opening of the Canadian embassy in Armenia and the appointment of Andrew Turner as the first resident ambassador will be a new stimulus in the development of relations between the two countries.

Referring to the regional challenges, the Speaker of the RA NA emphasized. “We understand that the key system of our security is democracy. We hope that international partners will support democratic Armenia in establishing long-term peace in the region.”

In this context, the head of the parliament presented to the ambassador the process of signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, referred to the immediate return of prisoners in Azerbaijan. According to Alen Simonyan, even after the implementation of the agreement on the exchange of prisoners between Armenia and Azerbaijan, there will still be Armenian prisoners in that country.

The ambassador expressed readiness for further cooperation, noted that Canada supports Armenia’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and democracy.

According to him, the Canadian foreign minister’s visit to Armenia and the opening of the embassy are another proof of support for Armenia’s democracy.
