The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) an independent tribunal’s decision to acquit world number one tennis player Yannick Siner of wrongdoing after he failed a doping test, WADA said.
The appeal decision comes after Syner avoided a suspension despite testing positive twice for a banned steroid.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) revealed in August that two tests on the Italian showed low levels of Closteball in March, a few weeks after his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.
The tribunal’s finding of “no fault or negligence”, which accepted Yannick Siner’s explanation that the substance had accidentally entered his body through a product his physiotherapist used to treat a small wound, was not correct under the applicable rules, it said the statement of the anti-doping agency.
WADA also said the appeal was filed on Thursday, seeking a “period of ineligibility between one and two years” for the Italian, who won the US Open this year in addition to the Australian Open.
“WADA does not seek disqualification of any results other than those already imposed by the tribunal of first instance,” the agency said.
The ITIA’s decision can be appealed in addition to WADA and the Italian doping authorities.
