He is a monster among monsters. Not the largest known, but the one that shines the brightest and the one that has grown the fastest during the last 9,000 million years. This is a huge new black holediscovered by Australian astronomers and named J1144, with a mass equal to that of 3,000 million suns and that devours the equivalent of all the matter on Earth every second that passes.

To get an idea, J1144 is about 500 times larger than Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole that resides in the center of our own galaxy and whose first images were recently presented. The new ‘monster’, like Sagittarius A*, also has a ring of incandescent matter spinning around it, only much larger and brighter.
