A few moments ago, the Brazilian Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) declared the winner in the second presidential round to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who prevailed in a close contest against the current president, Jair Bolsonaro.
With 99.17% of the votes counted, Lula reached 50.85% of the preferenceswhile Bolsonaro stayed at 49.15%.
Once the results were known, the Brazilian president-elect gave a speech to his followers, who came en masse to hear his words.
“I am going to govern for everyone and not just for those who voted for me (…) Nobody is interested in living in a divided country and in a state of almost war (…) It is time to lower the weapons that should never have been wielded”, he began by saying.
Along these lines, he continued stating that “we are going to combat violence against women and guarantee that they earn the same salary as men. Let’s stand up to racism and discrimination“.
Already on economic issues, he launched: “The wheel of the economy is going to turn again with the poor forming part of the budget (…) Our most urgent commitment is to end hungeragain”.
“This is not a victory for me or for the PT, but for an immense democratic movement that is above the parties,” added the Brazilian president-elect.
Finally, Lula ended his speech with a challenging sentence to his detractors. “They tried to bury me alive and I am here to rule this country in a very difficult situation“, hill.
