They urge Health to investigate the increase in adverse effects from ibuprofen

Now the Organization of consumers and users (OCU) remember that ibuprofen is contraindicated in patients with a history of gastrointestinal ulcer, bleeding or perforation, as well as severe kidney disease.

The popular medicine, like the rest of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), is contraindicated in the patients mentioned above. And given that the incidence of unwanted effects of NSAIDs increases with the dose, in the specific case of ibuprofen requires a prescription in presentations equal to or greater than 600 mg.

Not so in lower presentations, such as 400 mg, where the self-consumption and sale without medical prescription.

The fact is that the French medicines agency has just warned of an increase in registered cases with serious adverse effects, in particular gastrointestinal bleeding and kidney damage, in parallel with the increase in advertising of ibuprofen 400 mg, which is why it will prohibit its advertising from next April 2, it will not be sold.

For all these reasons, the OCU has asked the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS) to investigate as soon as possible in our country if there is also an increase in registered cases of unwanted effects associated with self-consumption of ibuprofen 400 mg over the counteras well as dexketoprofen 25 mg, another lesser-known over-the-counter NSAID.

Meanwhile, OCU remembers that the recommended dose for an adult is one ibuprofen 400 mg tablet three times a day. And that, both for ibuprofen and for any other NSAID, the dose should always be the shortest and for the shortest time possible.
