The Extremaduran photographer Lorenzo Cordero captured the image in Casar de Cáceres
A photograph showing an aurora borealis, made from the town of Casar de Cáceres by the Extremaduran photographer Lorenzo Cordero, has been chosen by NASA as the astronomical image (APOD) for this Tuesday, April 25. It was Lamb himself who announced NASA’s decision through social networks.
“NASA chooses my photograph of the northern lights taken from Casar de Cáceres (Extremadura), as the image of the day. In this sense, NASA adds that the aurorae were the result of a strong Coronal Mass Event (CME) that occurred on the Sun a few days ago, in such a way that the CME particles crossed the inner Solar System before colliding with Earth’s magnetosphere.
“From there, the electrons and protons spiraled down Earth’s northern magnetic field lines and collided with oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere, causing picturesque auroral glows.
