Everything is becoming more expensive: This is how inflation arises – and what can be good about it. (Quelle: t-online)

The inflation rate continues to fall. But is this also reflected in consumer prices? t-online takes a look at the supermarket shelves for you.

Inflation in Germany continues to decline. As the Federal Statistical Office reported on Tuesday, the inflation rate in March was only 2.2 percent. In March 2023 it was significantly higher at 7.4 percent.

But what does that actually mean for consumers? t-online looks at the supermarket shelves for you. To do this, our editorial team regularly notes the prices for selected products in the Rewe online shop and in branches of the supermarket chain.

The falling inflation rate does not necessarily mean that products are becoming cheaper for consumers, just that prices are rising more slowly. But a look at our shopping cart shows that some prices have fallen slightly compared to the previous survey at the end of January 2024. At a glance:

There were particularly strong price declines for flour (minus 30.15 percent) and sunflower oil (minus 26.76 percent). The price decline was somewhat less pronounced for apples (minus 2.64 percent), rice (minus 5.29 percent) and cheese (minus 5.82 percent).

Bread and peppers add a lot of weight

However, consumers have to pay significantly more for peppers. These rose by a whopping 50.28 percent compared to January 2024. Sauerkraut (plus 4.57 percent), potatoes (plus 3.72 percent) and bread (plus 6.71 percent) also increased in price.

If you only compare the goods that were available both in the last survey in January and now, the customer now only pays 71.48 euros at the supermarket checkout instead of 76.6 euros. That’s a price drop of 6.92 percent.

For the survey: Since the supermarket regularly changes its range, makes special offers or certain products are temporarily unavailable, not all items can be compared every time the t-online shopping cart is surveyed. This was taken into account in the total shopping cart with an appropriate adjustment. How much more expensive life actually becomes ultimately depends largely on your own consumption habits.
